Six students at Eastside Elementary School who received perfect scores last spring on the annual IREAD-3 assessment test were honored during a presentation at the Anderson Community Schools board of trustees monthly meeting this week.
Board members recognized Evoli Goen, Mara Schultz, Elaina Stull, An Ha, Jacklynn Woods and Benji Craton for achieving perfect scores of 650 on the test, given to second and third graders statewide to “measure foundational reading skills based in Indiana academic standards through grade three,” according to the Indiana Department of Education’s website.
Craton achieved his perfect score on the test as a second grader.
The assessment also measures students’ abilities in reading silently and comprehending nonfiction texts. Beginning with the current academic year, second grade students are also required to take the assessment.
Board members also congratulated administrators at Eastside Elementary School, which was named an Indiana Purple Star School last week by the Indiana Department of Education. According to the IDOE’s website, “the Indiana Purple Star School designation honors schools that have displayed a significant commitment to service members, veterans, students and families connected to our nation’s military.”
“We are very appreciative,” ACS Board President Patrick Hill said during a brief presentation. “It is a real honor to be included among those 130 schools in the state of Indiana that have that kind of deep connection with our serving men and women.”
During the meeting, the board also heard an announcement that $19,662 will be donated to the district’s School Nurses Fund from a record $125,000 raised at the annual Community Chefs event in October. In the past, nurses have used the fund to purchase supplies including medicine, hygiene products, and glasses for ACS students.
